Oh, dear…
Started backup, went for about 10 minutes and then system went down, *hard*. BSOD, kernal panic, yada yada dumping memory have a nice day.
So I don’t know what to think. Drive made similar clicking noise before crash. Upon reboot, system did not come up cleanly or usably. Turned power off at switch, turned back on, system seems normal now, trying another backup. Fingers crossed.

1. Open up your case
2. Get a can of compressed air and blow out any dust on fans or grills
3. Point a small desk fan *right at* the hard drive in question
Run it like this until the backup is done.

If, by the way, you’ve removed the heatspreader in your laptop for any reason, you probably need to replace the thermal tape that was on it, between it and the CPU. I did not, and my laptop started running hotter and actually crashed a couple of times, presumably due to overheating. After I replaced the thermal tape (using acetone to clean off the residue of the old tape), it hasn’t done it since and it appears to run a bit cooler now–at least the fan isn’t running all the time like it was before.
I suppose you could use plain old heatsink grease but thermal tape is preferred by AMD–they say that the contraction/expansion of the heatsink/CPU over many shutdown cycles eventually forces the thermal grease out.
