Troubleshooting continues..

I tried replacing teh splitter with a uber-wide-bandwidth-low-loss model. No improvement.

I tried setting up QoS to limit outgoing rate to 500kbit/sec. No improvement.

I tried putting the modem in the flow from the fan. Noticable improvement.

Now I’m trying filling a pan with ice and setting it on top of the modem.. no improvement yet, but .. ahh.. yes.. there we go.. 25 ms ping times as long as the modem is kept iced.

No packet loss either..

later update: oops. Problem recurs. Just takes a while longer to do so.

Now I’m trying modem on extremely low line voltage.. (100v)

seems to doing better..

Cox is supposed to send someone out here tomorrow @ 1p. Problem happens quickly enough that I’m guessing I can get him to wait the ten minutes or so it usually takes for ping times to go to hell in a handbasket.

You realize I used to work for Cox in your part of OC.

Tell me the troubles and what model modem you have and I will see what I can do.

    I have Cox@Work, and it’s a Model U10C018 – ‘Ambit’

The trouble is this: When I first fire up the modem, it works beautifully – 2-3 megabits down and 1.5 megabits up, 20mS ping to default gateway, 35mS ping to Google. Over time, the performance degrades.. pings to the default gateway go up from 20mS to 200mS to 2000mS. Eventually the modem fails altogeather.

During the degradation time, the modem will go from having both tx and rx flashing to having it appear to be operating in half duplex (TX will stay solid for a while, then RX, then TX..). Or, sometimes it will appear to be operating at a 25% duty cycle – the lights go on for about a quarter second and then stay off for a second (both TX and RX). (That’s what it’s currently doing)

Once the modem is no longer able to talk, the ‘ready’ light flashes and the ‘RX’ light flashes. The ‘TX’ light no longer flashes.

At all times the ‘Sync’ light stays solid.
